Crowds count down incorrectly at sporting events and other events involving a timed countdown.
Does it bother anyone else that crowds technically count down the clock wrong at events?
When the scoreboard goes to 10, the crowd screams "Ten!" immediately. But that’s just the start of the 10th second. Technically, there are still 10.99 seconds left in play. Because everyone shouts the number as soon as they see it, everything is running a second fast.
The annoying part is at the end. The crowd screams "ZERO!" while the clock technically still has roughly 0.99 seconds left. It creates this awkward moment where fans are celebrating the win, but the players are still frantically trying to make a play because the actual buzzer hasn't gone off yet.
It would make more sense to say the number when it disappears from the scoreboard, but I understand that's not how human nature works-- people want to say the number when it appears.
