Screen looking washed out

After updating to 1.9.5 on android tv( Hisense firestick 4k), the screen edges appear grey and not black as they usually do. I changed from exoplayer to libVlc, and this fixed the problem, but now my subtitles don't work and are out of sync. Any recommendations or advice?
