Torn Between Maximizing Savings at Home vs Moving Out – Need Advice on Allocation
I’m looking for some perspective on whether I’m thinking about this the right way.
I’ve been living at home since I started working last July. Financially, it’s been great. I’ve been able to save and invest aggressively. But mentally, I just don’t want to stay much longer.
I know I can save a ton by staying home. But I’d honestly rather move out, take on more responsibility, gain life experience, and push myself. I don’t always do well mentally when things feel “too easy.” I feel like having real bills and pressure would motivate me to pursue raises, bonuses, and growth more aggressively.
Here’s where I’m at financially:
- $12k in 401k
- $15.5k in Roth IRA (frontloaded Jan 1)
- $11.75k in HYSA emergency fund (1 contribution away from $12k goal)
- $1k regular savings
- ~$1.5k checking
I’m paid bi-weekly and currently allocate:
- $925 → 401k
- $550 → brokerage
- $250 → HYSA
Once my EF hits $12k next week, that $250 per paycheck becomes flexible.
I’m looking to move into a rental house with 3 friends at around ~$1k/month rent before utilities/other expenses. If a good listing pops up, I’m ready to go ASAP.
My concern: am I over-investing for someone about to take on rent and move-out costs?
Should I:
- Reduce brokerage contributions temporarily?
- Start building a separate “move-out fund” for security deposit, furnishing, etc.?
- Keep investing aggressively and just cash flow the move when it happens?
And once I move out, what would a solid investment/savings structure look like? Reduce 401k to just the match? Pause brokerage? Just scale back to match a 3–6 month EF at new expense levels?
Would appreciate any thoughts — especially from people who chose either to stay home longer or move out earlier for lifestyle reasons.
If there’s any other info that would help (income, age, etc.), let me know.
