45m question about appropriate underwear etiquette during FBE
For the past few years, I’ve been trying to be better about my health in general, including regular dermatological exams.
When it comes to these exams, the nurse will usually say something like, “go ahead and disrobe. You can leave your underwear on.” I’m not at any particular heightened risk of skin cancer that I am aware of, but for family reasons that won’t get into right now, I also am very keen on not cutting any corners.
At my appointment last year, I took everything off, but this was partly because I was also there to have a skin tag on my inner thigh removed. At one point during the exam, the doctor asked if I had removed my underwear in order to look at the skin tag or if I wanted her to examine my genitals. I said both.
I didn’t think much of it, but I got to thinking afterwards if that was weird in some way. I would prefer the exam to cover my entire body, but I am just wondering if it would be more appropriate to let them work around the underwear. That feels like it may be more awkward somehow. I’m not particularly shy, but I’d rather not exchange too many words about it.
I’m 99% sure the answer is “they’re professionals. Do what makes you comfortable,” but I just thought I’d ask.
