AITAH: for telling my stepdaughter she has to choose either cake or cupcakes for her birthday party
Ok that title sounds like such a small problem— which it is! I was a cake decorator for many years and one of the things I was asked to help with for my step daughter’s birthday was to make a cake for the party. I’m genuinely totally happy to! I make my step kids a special cake every year, regardless of if they have a party or not. Yesterday my stepdaughter (turning 14) told me she wants her guests to have cupcakes so she can have a cake to herself. I told her part of having a party is to enjoy cake together with your friends and family—that I could either make her a cake to share or cupcakes, but not both. It was not well received and I got a scoff and an eye roll. I don’t want to be an evil stepmother in telling her no and I don’t want to overstep my role as a step parent by telling her what she can or can’t have at her party…but I kind of feel that’s not even socially acceptable to invite friends over, receive gifts, and then not share your cake with them.
Side note: I’ll be 36 weeks pregnant at the time of her party, and while I’m happy to do both if that is really what will make her happy, it is extra work for me that I don’t particularly need.
So again, is this a big problem? Not at all. But I’m just curious if ITAH in this situation. Should I encourage her to share, or should I just let her do it her way?
