Wall of Rant Incoming: I'm soo over Cambly
I've absolutely had it. I had built up a set of regular students that I worked with for more than a year. I developed great relationships with each student, seen an increase in their English reading, speaking, heck even at times grammar abilities. And what happens? The parents suddenly choose another tutor or disappear without saying a word. Honestly, this is baffling and rude from a professional perspective and wouldn't be tolerated on another platform or personal tutor's website without consequences.
But you know what? Cambly doesn't give a crap anyways. Recently, they have made booking with student's TWICE as hard by adding "choose kid or adult" tabs which can make scheduling cumbersome for people with a mix of students and doesn't allow freedom for easy rescheduling. They've alienated tutors from each other by playing some bullshit game of "Regular Cambly" tutors and "Cambly Pro" tutors. Is the CEO trying to get tutors to quit? Camby lost the plot years ago. They screwed up by not prioritizing their tutors, hiding under contractor status while controlling pay rate and treating tutors overall like they bring zero value to the company. Meanwhile, they lie to students about what services to expect and tell incoming tutors that it's a conversational platform so there is built-in miscommunication off the bat. Cambly has already been found out on websites like Trustpilot and the reviews are just terrible from tutors and students alike. I don't see things looking well for Cambly in the future. I'm just glad I am not reliant on this company.
Anyone who is just starting to work here or has been working here for years BEWARE and PLEASE let this be a casual thing you do. It can't be any more than that when this company doesn't value their contracting tutors. It's NOT a reflection on you as a tutor (unless you're providing nothing at all). It IS, however, a reflection of a crappy company that got money hungry and lost the plot years ago. Please know there are other platforms you could work for but also consider starting your own tutoring business on the side. Stop outsourcing your effort and talents that could bring you more money to a company who could care less.
