When your bestie’s wedding turns into a friendship test… who’s actually wrong here?
Asian Wedding.Using fake names for privacy. Also, Anna is not me.
Amy is getting married. It is a big ten day wedding with multiple venues and a lot of logistics involved. She has a huge amount of luggage and asked her childhood best friend Christy to come by car and bring some of the bags along.
Christy had originally planned to travel by train because it was more affordable. When Amy asked her to switch to coming by car and carry the luggage, Christy said she could not afford the extra cost and asked Amy to cover the difference. That did not sit well with Amy and the situation escalated to Christy saying she might not attend if she is being pressured to bring bags.
Now Anna is Amy’s college best friend. When she found out about the wedding plans, she did not even think twice about expenses. Her only thought was that she needed to be there for her friend.
Here is where it gets complicated. Amy earns significantly more than both Christy and Anna and is financially comfortable. However, she is very particular about expenses. In the past, she has even skipped attending a close friend’s wedding because she felt the travel cost was too much.
Anna understands Christy’s point. Christy planned her travel according to her budget and suddenly she is expected to spend more money and also help with wedding logistics. That feels unfair.
At the same time, Anna cannot help but feel that if Amy really needed help with the luggage, she could have simply offered to cover the additional cost without it becoming an issue.
Now Anna feels stuck in the middle. It does not feel like it is only about money. It feels like it is about effort, boundaries, and what friends expect from each other during major life moments.
Is Christy wrong for setting a boundary? Is Amy wrong for expecting the adjustment? Or is Anna overthinking this entire situation?
What would you honestly think if you were in this friend group?
