What is Agentic Ai and when it started ?

I have been trying to zoom out and understand what is actually happening with AI because it feels like we skipped a few chapters

Before ChatGPT before GPT 4 before all these AI tools selling subscriptions there was something else

In 2016 DeepMind built AlphaGo and it beat Lee Sedol one of the best Go players in the world

That moment was different like hella yes for world

Go is not chess, it's is not brute force and damn - It requires intuition long term planning and something that feels almost human

When AlphaGo made move 37 experts thought it was a mistake and later they realized it was brilliant

That was the first time a lot of people felt AI was not just calculating
It was making decisions

Then in 2017 researchers published a paper called Attention Is All You Need
This paper introduced the transformer architecture and changed the perception
Most modern language models are built on that foundation

In 2019 OpenAI released GPT 2 and it could write paragraphs that felt human
At the time it felt scary. In 2020 GPT 3 came out with 175 billion parameters
Developers started building tools on top of it and it still mostly a tech circle thing

Then late 2022 ChatGPT happened
And that changed everything like for people like you and me who dont follow much ai news

Suddenly anyone could talk to a powerful language model
No coding, No setup ,Just type and it responds - it was BOOM

It reached 100 million users in about two months
That is when AI stopped being a research topic and became a cultural moment

Then GPT 4 improved reasoning and accuracy and its then with updates it could analyze images write code pass exams and Businesses started taking it seriously. With students using it for cheat codes for real life

And then another word started floating around

Agentic AI

So what is that really

To me AI in the simplest human way is this

AI is a system that learns patterns from massive amounts of data and then uses those patterns to make predictions decisions or generate responses that feel intelligent

It is not thinking the way humans think, it is not conscious and it is pattern recognition at scale

Now agentic AI is when you take that pattern recognition system and give it goals

Not just answer my question But complete this task to Break it into steps and for you Use tools to Check results and Adjust whenever it is required

That shift happened around 2023 when people started building things like AutoGPT and other agent frameworks and Instead of just chatting with the model they wrapped it in loops so it could plan and execute

That is when AI started moving from talking to acting

And now we are seeing companies embedding these systems into real workflows
Into logistics and Into construction equipment more

It feels like the progression has been

First AI could calculate
Then it could generate
Now it can coordinate

I am not saying this is sentient or magical
But it does feel like we moved from software that responds
To systems that operate

And I am honestly wondering

Are we still early
Or are we already watching AI become infrastructure quietly in the background
