Does anyone remember where the garage sale demons idea originated?

I swear I remember reading something like that on the old CD-ROM library, but maybe I'm wrong. Basically the idea was that you had to be careful who you bought items from when you went to garage sales, because sometimes the objects could be infested with demons that invaded your home. Was this just a tall tale shared between halls, like the smurf story?
