Thought on a combo of Batt/loose fill attic insulation?
Hi All,
I’m going to be adding more insulation to our vented attic. Currently the loose fill is about 1 inch over the bottom chord of our trusses, about r-19 to r-21.
Since I’m in climate zone 5 I am going to target adding ~r30 insulation.
I’m on my own, so I’m limited in options for installation and can’t do the entire space with loose fill and a machine.
I’ll be pulling back insulation to check and air seal top plates and boxes/bathroom fans first, then installing rafter vents for the vented soffits.
After that I’m looking at adding r30 batts perpendicular to the bottom chords to prevent major settling of the current loose fill.
I’m considering a couple bags of loose fill to cover gaps around the top plates/rafter vents rather than stuffing r30 batts in narrow areas. I’m also wondering if it’s not worth that effort and just using batts knowing it will lose a small amount of R value.
Thoughts on the approach?
