I am you, me
I see the ghost you’ve dressed me in today,
A target for the grief you can’t waylay.
I know that sharp distrust, that heavy chill-
I’ve climbed that same, exhausting, jagged hill.
You’ve handed me a script I didn't write,
And cast me as the villain in your night.
You’re reading lines from wounds of long ago,
Projecting shadows where they shouldn't grow.
There is a silence where our words should be,
A fog that keeps you from truly seeing me.
You search my eyes for secrets I don't hold,
To fit the story you have already told.
But if we breathed through the static and the fear,
The ghosts would fade and leave the human here.
I am the mirror for the parts you hide,
But I am also this heart on the other side.
We're a world of mirrors, blurred and stained,
Passing on the weight of all we’ve sustained.
If we laid down the masks and let the silence end,
We’d find a human where we saw a ghost, my friend.
