Thought I Regretted Buying the 17… Until I Compared It to the 17 Pro
So I need to share this because I’ve been overthinking it for weeks.
When I bought the regular iPhone 17, I instantly started regretting not getting the 17 Pro. I kept thinking I should’ve just paid the difference and gone Pro for the zoom and camera.
Yesterday I went back to the store fully ready to switch. I spent more than an hour comparing my 17 with the 17 Pro side by side.
And honestly… I didn’t see that huge difference I was expecting.
For portrait mode, 1x, 2x, and 3x look basically identical in terms of quality. On the regular 17, portraits stop at 3x. On the Pro, they go up to 5x — but up to 3x, I genuinely couldn’t see a quality difference between the two.
For regular photos, from 1x to 4x the performance felt almost exactly the same on both phones. Same sharpness, same overall look.
After 4x is where things start to separate. The regular 17 does lose some quality as you zoom further in. But on the Pro, while it keeps more detail, the colors shift in a way that I personally didn’t like at all — they start leaning toward a reddish/pink tone.
What surprised me is that on my regular 17, even at 4x or 6x, the colors stayed more consistent and natural to my eyes. Maybe technically the Pro has more reach, but visually I preferred how the regular 17 handled color.
I’m not saying the Pro is bad. It’s definitely stronger for longer zoom. But for how I actually use my phone, the difference wasn’t big enough to justify switching.
Also, the Pro felt noticeably heavier in my hand. And that’s funny because my regular 17 had a case on it, while the Pro in the store didn’t — and it still felt heavier.
I walked into the store ready to upgrade and walked out realizing it’s probably not worth it for me.
