I critique work the way I do across every aspect of this industry because after 11 years in fashion and 6 years as the owner of my own atelier, I’ve learned one thing very clearly: this industry does not reward intent, moodboards or articulation.

It rewards those who can execute under constraint, within the vision of the owners, boards, and senior brand and creative directors of a brand/house/atelier.

It rewards people who can read a brand as a system and either adapt themselves precisely to it or detach from it entirely to build their own system. There is no other sustainable path.

Earning well as a designer, something many people openly struggle with in this industry isn’t just about technical execution like sewing, knitting, or pattern making.

Those skills from your foundation, not the destination. When people graduate from high-level institutions where they’ve been trained to execute independently and graded on their own collections and ideas, it often creates the illusion that this directly entitles them to a six-figure senior brand or creative director position, complete with full creative freedom to continue doing what they were taught at school.

In reality, professional design rarely works like this and begins after that point when individual authorship gives way to operating inside existing systems, constraints, hierarchies, and commercial responsibility.

It’s about the ability to translate direction into work that survives contact with physics, production realities, and most importantly, clients who actually pay. This is essentially one of the core responsibility of a brand and creative director team.

For context: my work is highly polarising in this group and across all social media platforms. It's very specific where some people either understand it, and others find it subjectively funny, tacky or repulsive.

The truth is simpler! It sells, and it sells to a very specific clientele. A clientele built by my family since 1983 whose current reality is defined by discretionary spending that does not tolerate fantasy garments or unresolved ideas, and that consistently prefers truth over visibility/marketing hype and trends.

Our clients are not average consumers in a broad sense. They are ruthless, demanding, decisive, and hyper allergic to marketing masks. Material honesty here is the most important pillar in my field, and they care about that more than the transaction itself.

My own practice reflects this trajectory. I started in traditional tailoring as an apprentice where precision, discipline, and hard constraints are non negotiable.

Over time, we moved into more experimental fashion design not by abandoning structure, but by translating both soft logic (expression, narrative, tension) and hard logic (construction, material behaviour, physics) into a single system.

In that system, emotion is not the driver.
It is the byproduct, whether positive or negative. When I question logic and authorship, it isn’t to talk down to someone. It’s because I expect the same level of objective critique in return.

At this level, fabric behaviour, pattern logic, load, gravity, wear, and longevity matter more regardless of whether you agree with the designer’s premise or not or if it hurts your ego or not.

I value authorship because authorship implies liability. Owning a decision means being accountable when it fails which is sometimes painful but if the critique is grounded in facts rather the subjectivity that accountability is what separates real design from untested ideas which are intriguing to explore. That is also the kind of feedback I expect which is within my right but personally also know that I can't demand this from others to give. Those two are totally different premises.

Ownership of decisions matters more than ego, titles, management labels, creative vibes, emotional accusations, or shouting AI cause none of this moves the actual design, closes clients, or protects designers when things fail in real life and it certainly doesn’t get you paid.
In fact, it usually does the opposite from what I've observed.

If this standard feels uncomfortable, that’s fine but understand that discomfort marks the gap between design as a form of self expression and design as a profession.

Work isn’t about taste, it isn’t about tone
Work is about reality and reality is the only language that builds equity instead of debt.

You may call it arrogance, tacky, pretentious or any other slur but reality never masks the truth.

Wishing you all the best of luck on your personal journey.
