What do I need to know before first lesson?

People on Reddit say you need a lesson if you have never skiied before. Since you need sonething special in order to ski and I don't have it, what should I consider a success at the first lesson? I'll be happy if I slide forward three feet at the first lesson. Is that at all realistic? I feel like I am missing out on something fun that seems to be so easy for everyone else.
