The story of how Brazil was colonised is super interesting. I wrote up a post a few weeks ago about who the Tupi are in real life and since then I've been learning about what happened to them.

First contact with Europeans came via the **Portuguese** but it wasn't the only contact. In an alternate timeline the people of Brazil would be speaking **French** today. The **new campaign Arariboia** is set in the proxy wars that took place between Portugal and France. Arariboia was the leader of a Tupi tribe that played a critical role in Portugal's victory. Much later there was a more direct takeover attempt by the **Dutch** but this didn't work out either.

As someone who is not from Brazil, this is all completely new to me and it's been interesting realising how relevant the Tupi story still is over there. The **in-game 'castle**' is based on a drawing of what the Tupi villages looked like at the time. In fact, most of what we know about the Tupi comes from European sources around this time.
