Jagged Little Pill Community Theatre Casting

So my local community theater is doing Jagged Little Pill this summer and the cast list was just released. I, being nonbinary, auditioned for Jo and so did many other talented nonbinary people in the community. The director (a 60 y/o cis white man) cast a cis woman in the role. Yes, I’m a little upset about not being cast in the role I would like, but I’m more upset about losing the representation in the show.

I wanted to get some other opinions from people not directly involved at the theater. Do you think Jo should always be cast as a nonbinary performer, even in community theatre considering the 2020/2021 controversy? Or is it not that serious?
