sweetbunny22 AI, since people won’t stop defending it
before i even start, if you’re reading this from a place of already being tired of this discourse, please actually read this whole thing before absolutely crashing out
i’ve been in fandom spaces since i was like 11 or 12. close to a decade at this point. i grew up here. i know the etiquette, i know the cycles, and i know how fast people jump to shut conversations down the moment a fic is criticized, as if criticism automatically equals puritanism or harassment
so let me separate things so extremely clearly first so we can actually NOT be arguing over the wrong things
people complaining about the fic being explicit, kinky, uncomfortable, whatever - that is not what this post is about. not even remotely. fanfiction has ALWAYS been (and will ALWAYS be becuase i’ll fight like hell if anybody tries to stop it) a place to explore literally anything. that’s the entire point of tags. you read it or you don’t. end of fucking story. if someone can’t handle that they probably shouldn’t be in fandom yet, because policing content is what actually harms fandom spaces. i will defend writers’ right to write whatever they want, every time, forever. so people that were all over the fic for that should be rightfully called out and maybe re-question there space here if they can’t handle that
this discussion is not about sex or morality or taste
it is about authorship
about this fic being ai
and before anyone loses their complete bullshit - yes, i know you cannot prove ai with 100% certainty. nobody can. ai is trained on human text and will keep sounding more and more human over time. neurodivergent writers exist, myself included, and people have different rhythms and structures and writing patterns. some younger writers are even learning to write alongside ai and naturally mirror its patterns. you can go read fics from years ago and occasionally they’ll feel similar. that’s all very real and undeniable and nobody is arguing that
and also yes - the internet massively overuses ai accusations now. MASSIVELY. especially in fandom spaces, most of the time it is wrong and very harmful
a 2k fic feeling off is not evidence.
a 10k fic feeling repetitive is not evidence.
even a handful of “tells” is not evidence.
and no, em dashes have existed for forever and mean absolutely fucking nothing. it’s insane argument to conjure and also is an annoying comeback to anybody who does have doubts about fics. nobody is suggesting something is ai based simply off em dashes, and if they are, well,,, that’s unbelievably stupid
one indicator cannot prove ai. even ten indicators cannot. feelings cannot. vibes cannot. none of it can with certainty
but scale and continuity matters
when something crosses one hundred thousand words and the same mechanical patterns repeat continuously, you are no longer looking at coincidence. you are looking at statistical behavior maintained across hundreds of pages that humans are not capable of. continuity, of course they are, but not in the same exact patterns
i read over 30k words of fanfic a day and have for years. i do get gut feelings, in every fandom i read across and i never call those out because they’re just impressions. most fics are too short to distinguish style from generation. that would be unfair to writers and should not be done
this fic is not that situation
the issue is not a single tell. it’s a system of them repeating across massive massive massive length
so here is what people are actually noticing
recursive realizations
mike keeps reaching the same emotional conclusion as if it is new every time. the jealousy, the “i have no claim”, the moral guilt, the acceptance, then reset. humans progress psychologically, and even when they don’t (which happens very frequently in spinal ppl, it’s the patterning in which those recursive realizations take form repeatedly) - ai restates the same thesis whenever the topic returns
explanation after every scene
events happen and then the narration explains what they meant emotionally. over and over. not occasionally - consistently. human writing usually lets implication carry meaning. generated prose frequently clarifies the takeaway
evenly distributed, non personified metaphors
the metaphors are constant and evenly spaced, and they pull from rotating domains - religion, law, war, cinema, engineering - rather than a single personal imagery pool. human writers cluster metaphors when inspired and even when they don’t they don’t pull rationally inwards. ai distributes them and reprocesses the same ones again and again. hence why there are sentences that are used in this fic that have been used again and again in other ai generated fics. metaphors and figurative language are usually overly explained while also being extremely vague - “a victorian child holding a red rose” and that’s not taken from this fic but this is a good example
modular escalation structure
every arc climbs in clean steps: discovery, reaction, interpretation, joke beat, escalation. repeatedly. humans meander, stall, overfocus, or spiral unevenly. this progresses like levels, which makes it sound like it would be better for it but is actually what most people “feel” when they question a works legitimacy. it’s considered the most jarring for avid readers to be faced with and almost all english literature classes when discussing famous writers rotate in this sphere, hence why such blankness
symmetrical dialogue rhythm
banter maintains identical timing regardless of situation - panic, exhaustion, conflict, comedy. people don’t keep perfect conversational cadence under all emotional conditions. models do because dialogue is learned as formatted exchange and hence why a lot of comedy falls flat and then demands payout even when not earned. not that all human writers are comedians but it’s the circular loop or the same dialogue persisting and needing to follow its conclusion no matter the context
stable cognition under fatigue
characters experience sleep deprivation, panic, emotional overload, and the narration remains equally polished, witty, and structurally complex. real pov prose degrades with mental state. generated narration does not, again making us be told how the character feels rather than showing us. many writers are tellers and not showers, even if showing is definitely considered what most people gravitate towards, but even when they do, it isn’t, again, with the same continuity
thesis sentence patterns
constant constructions like “it wasn’t x - it was y” and “he didn’t want a, he wanted b”. humans use these sometimes. ai uses them persistently because it compresses meaning into explicit contrasts, because it still struggles to circle how else to
self contained paragraph blocks
paragraphs repeatedly introduce, expand, and summarize an idea cleanly with very few unfinished thoughts. human drafting leaves fragments. generated prose arrives pre packaged, and not for the best. it’s why there’s so many staggered conclusions even when the problems aren’t resolved. a extremely oversimplified example when they’re usually much more nuanced “and tomorrow, tomorrow, he’ll step forward and stand in front of him and tell him. Even if it’s the last thing he does.” again, this kind of conclusion being at the end of multiple sections, as if answering a non-existent thesis
repetition without awareness
concepts reappear rephrased rather than developed. not callbacks - rediscoveries. that difference matters a lot across long form text
there are many many more. perpetual clarity of thought, informational redundancy, consistent dramatic intensity even across other subject matters that aren’t pinnacle or even subplots of the story, for example in the story something happens, mike reacts, then the narration explicitly tells us what that reaction means - so:
stimulus
sensory description
metaphor
then a line clarifying the emotional thesis
sensory categories rotate predictably
descriptions cycle through the same sensory slots:
visual to tactile to temperature to pressure to sound to metaphor to over explained meaning
almost like a checklist of immersion rather than spontaneous noticing
none of these alone prove anything on their own
even in short lengths because we can’t argue this was had for so long it refuses reason
over massive continuous length, repeating in the same ratios, they become diagnostic. that is why long works reveal it and short ones don’t
and yes - just because there are hand edits and performative mistakes they do not disprove it’s ai. if anything, they strengthen the idea. someone can absolutely generate a body of text and then tweak lines, add jokes, insert parentheses, add a line like they did in the last chapter and saying this then disapproved ai? as if you don’t have the ability to write? that doesn’t prove anything.., or write a other stuff in manually
also the “ai won’t write smut” argument i keep hearing people say is just false. many many many models do, and external tools especially do. one platform maybe refusing explicit content doesn’t mean the text wasn’t generated somewhere else
again, do not go harass the author. do not start dogpiling random writers. most suspicions online are wrong and damaging
but in a case this large, with this level of repeated structure across the entire work, people are not insane for noticing. and this is a completely separate issue from content taste
i love this fandom. i care about its fic culture a lot. and pretending the conversation itself cannot exist helps no one
ai will only get worse and claiming something isn’t ai when it is is extremely harmful
you can disagree with me, but at least disagree with the actual argument - not a different one
