i'm so happy that goat has a likeable landlord character.
i really do not have a very high opinion of landlords. they frequently take advantage of financially struggling people, evict tenants when they miss 1 rent payment or make a late payment or can no longer pay the extravagant rent prices that the landlord sets, and they often trample the boundaries of their tenants. i'm sure there are kind and compassionate landlords who are decent human beings but, at this point, they're the exception and not the rule.
and it seems like media agrees with me since landlords are often depicted as greedy assholes. as such, i figured that frank, will's landlord, in goat would be the same. however, frank is actually a sympathetic and likeable character.
firstly, it's established that frank desperately needs the money since his wife keeps popping out kids like a T shirt canon. so, he clearly does need his tenant's rent money. secondly, while he is rather impatient with will in regards to getting the rent money, he is clearly sympathetic to will and it's implied that he's given will a lot of leeway. thirdly, frank only evicts will as an absolute last resort. fourthly, it's established that, impatience and crankiness aside, frank is actually a pretty nice guy. fifthly, we actually get to see him cheering on will during the roarball games throughout the movie.
however, the thing that i really admire about frank's characterization is that, given that the film has a lot of cliches, it would have been super easy for the filmmakers to make frank yet another shitty landlord who kicks babies out onto the street when they can't afford the rent. but, the film actually made frank a 3 dimensional character.
god, this movie is so good!
