Getting overridden machines to attack

Is that possible?

I was doing the Valley of the Fallen sidequest and I overrode the Thunderjaw, thinking it would attack the Tremortusk, even when I was almost next to the Tusk. Instead, it just circled around me until the override ended.

Do I have to attack another machine first for an overridden machine to help me? In the first game, an overridden machine always attacked others
