How to choose which stream to take in higher grades.

Advice

In Bhutan, we have three streams in higher grades: Science, Commerce, and Arts.

Most students choose Science because it’s considered the hardest and is believed to lead to higher-paying jobs like medicine and engineering. It also keeps more future options open. Under Science, you can take both Biology and Math or drop one depending on your goals. If you want to study medicine, Biology is necessary (and sometimes Math helps for scholarships). For engineering or architecture, Math is required but Biology isn’t.

Commerce is good if you’re interested in business, accounting, or banking. The math is more business-focused and generally easier than pure math. While commerce careers can be high-paying abroad, opportunities in Bhutan are more limited compared to science.

Arts focuses more on English, History, and Geography. It can lead to careers in law, tourism, and related fields. It’s best suited for students who are strong in language and humanities.

At the end of the day, don’t just follow what everyone else is doing. Think about what you’re good at, what you’re interested in, and what career you see yourself in. Choose carefully based on your strengths and long-term goals.

As a Bhutanese, you can try Motap ni and Tsi tap ni as well. Cuz we never no meyna.
