Switch 2 is the perfect hardware for Now.

Discussion

I think the SW2 is the perfect blend of hardware and software capabilities that, if there was any justice in the world, would bring us back to that tipping point of 7th gen gaming on 8th gen hardware. [You can skip to the end from here if you want...]

Given how solid 7th/8th gens were, we don't need 10th gen; we need optimized 8th gen. 7th was an amazing time period for gaming, but 8th gen gave us the hardware 7th gen software wanted. This makes the hardware of the SW2 perfect for the time we're in.

Yes, i know some people may want to dog pile that statement, but if we walk through the peaks of gaming and our own critiques of what gaming has become - it's easy to see that 7th gen retained and expanded an experimentalist mindset and added in a AAA polish, but fell just a bit shy on the hardware side to make those dreams as smooth as we wanted.

In 8th gen, the devs and publishers failed us. We saw a hard dip in fun, experimental games. Remasters became the norm. Tried and true franchises were pushed hard by publishers. Micro-transactions took the high ground. The hardware seemed like a very small return on a big investment, but the hardware showed what the remasters could have been in 7th. Improved graphics and framerates, reduced loading times, truly open worlds - all made possible by the advance in hardware.

9th gen has been a hard sell to the point we're now near the end of this new gen and only now is the user base transitioning in it's majority. We need 7th gen devs and 8th gen hardware. More is just gratuitous and wasteful since the programmers aren't putting in the time and are leaning on the hardware and poorly optimized game engines to do the work for them.

With all that in mind, the SW2 is the perfect hardware to take advantage of the generation of Software that we're realistically still locked into. If devs and publishers could scale back their greed, learn from the best AA and indie devs that are being lauded right now, we could see a new Renaissance of gaming that hits that sweet spot of hardware and software cross over.

tl;dr

Just my thoughts on the subject. Do you think we need bigger-better-faster-more? Or has the hardware out-stripped the game development?
