Can you self publish and be successful?

Hey so I’m working on my debut and planning to just self publish as it’s faster and o think I’ll keep more of the profits this way. Is this true or am I being fooled by online nonsense? For context, the novel is a fantasy, first in a trilogy but written more like modern lit than your typical 1pp action or romance fantasy. Also, I’m happy to make websites and do marketing and have a tiny budget for that. Has anyone out there done this?
