having a dog during rotations

I am a current MS1 and i’m really thinking about getting a dog. I’ve always been around dogs and so not having one feels weird and I feel lonely living by myself. I would really love the companionship. Right now it works with my schedule (my parents let me have their dog for 2 months as a trial). But I am concerned about rotations. I will be living alone for most of 3rd year but my fiance is moving in with me about half way through that year. I also won’t have family nearby because all of the rotation sites are far. It would absolutely break my heart if I had to surrender the dog so I want to be absolutely sure. Anyone have any experience on having a dog? No judgement, I want to hear the good and the bad! Thanks!
