[KCD2] Mutt questions

I just got back the good boy, and i have some questions. Is it safe to keep Mutt walking around with me all the time? What happens if he dies? Does he have enough health to survive most enemies? How frequently should i feed him on my own/let him free to search for food, and will he be attacked by like wolfs or bandits when searching for food?
