Analysis of NHTSA Complaints for Ioniq 5
I bought a 2025 Ioniq 5 a year ago. I've been particularly troubled regarding all the Reddit comments and press regarding Integrated Charging Control Unit issues. I find the press and stories suspicious as they don't align with Hyundai reported information or how I would expect a large respected car manufacturer to respond.
I've had a long career of 35 years working in IT, predominately in data management and analysis. I thought it best to dive into the problem myself and analyze NHTSA data regarding. NHTSA provides APIs and downloads for all complaints. I uploaded all the complaints since 2019 into a DuckDB database for analysis.
Looking through the data it is apparent that there is a large anti-marketing effort to sully the reputation of what I find to be one of the best EVs on the market. The majority of the complaints are obviously bogus as a single VIN will show multiple Integrated Charging Control Unit complaints across different states coast to coast at times that aren't feasible for resale. These types of complaints make of the majority of what is in the NHTSA database.
I think it is safe to say that Hyundai reporting less than one percent of Ioniq 5 cars having an issue with their Integrated Charging Control Unit is reality. If you are looking to invest in an Ioniq 5 I would ignore the anti-marketing "fake news" and feel confident that you'll be supported by a reputable car manufacturer and are purchasing a quality product.
