Would you ever consider living with your non-American family, in their country? (24 M)

Career Advice

(This is Engineering remote work outside of the US possibility in the next few years)

My father is Ecuadorian. My mother is American.

They are divorced and my father lives in Ecuador. I lived there for 5 years in my childhood, and I have nothing but fond memories of my life there.

My family over there is well off by Ecuadorian standards. And, contrasting my family in the United States, the family unit is very close and loving. It’s a cultural thing for sure. It’s not that my family is not close in the US, we are, but it doesn’t feel the same as in Ecuador. The Spanish language is more affectionate as a language than English, and feelings and actions are more easily expressed in Ecuador IMO.

I’ve lived in the United States for 19 years. I was born here and had the 5 year stint in Ecuador as a child.

I am more American than Ecuadorian, culturally and linguistically. My Spanish is about 75% there and my English is perfect. While I will always likely be more “gringo”, I have my father and grandfathers physical appearance, fair skinned and clearly Latino.

I look like the adopted son in the US (brown among whites) and in Ecuador, my little brother is white is the (white among browns).

My dilemma is that I really love my family in Ecuador deeply, and I would consider changing my life to make them a more constant part of it. I’ve reconnected with them over the last few years, trips have been made back and forth for both parties.

Going over there makes me feel at peace. It’s like a calm settles over me. It’s something that has been lacking in my young adult life. Maybe it’s me going back and saving my inner child.

My grandmother cooks every day, several meals a day. And I swear to god it is always a religious experience eating her food. The freshness and quality of the food, the flavor is something you can’t find in the US imo. Life is slower and more deliberate over there.

My grandparents are just something to marvel at. They are both entering their 80s and are extremely healthy and mobile for their age. I always make a joke that my grandpa looks like he’s wearing an old man suit and there’s a young man under there pranking us.

I want to spend as much time with them as possible.

I was recently there for 3 weeks. I was riding the high harder the first few weeks back in the US. An additive to my romantic view of the possibility of living there, was a ROMANTIC encounter. My grandfather’s coworker is a lawyer who was 1 year younger than me and she was helping me get my dual citizenship. It was sort of out of a movie kind of romance, extremely circumstantial. She is so beautiful and classy. We danced and kissed once while I was there.

Ecuador pros:

-The dollar goes a long way there. They use US currency and everything is about 1/4 of the price.

-My family. The culture is rich. The food is better. Way better.

-I can attract women easier there. I am taller over there despite being average height in the US.

-The city where I’m from is very European and Romantic. People walk everywhere, the lifestyle is more active and organic.

-Extremely beautiful landscape (mountains, volcanoes)

Ecuador cons:

-Third world country. Less safe.

-Less access to crucial amenities

-Would have my American salary double taxed (likely) from remote work

USA pros:

-Life is comfortable and “stable”

-We have access to everything we need, whenever we need. Walmart fucking exists.

-I already have my life over here.

USA cons:

-Everything we consume feels like poison (it probably is)

-Life feels a bit curated at times. Long commutes. Nothing is walkable. Culture, in general, kinda sucks

Help me navigate the thought process. Am I an idiot for thinking that and should I get back to work and build my life here? Or is there some validity to my feelings? Anyone have life experience with this kinda thing? Will I regret one or the other?
