Is getting a puppy while on 4mo maternity leave a bad idea?

Our family really wants a puppy. We've always been dog people, but I've been hesitant since I'm trying not to overwhelm myself too much with a new baby and life in general. I know a dog will also make the house messier, and its kind of a disaster already trying to keep up with everything. However, we've been really over the moon with the thought of having a dog in the family again (I had 2 prior to kids)

So first off i'm not even fully set on getting a dog, but i do see an opportunity while i'm home full time for 4 months during maternity leave. It will be easier to house-break the puppy during this time and it would be an extra companion for my 7 yr old while i'm focused on baby.

I'm also concerned about returning to work and being able to juggle new day care pick up, caring for my own health and wellbeing, and managing another thing to keep alive.

Does anyone have experience with this to help sway my decision one way or another?
