Does anyone else’s in-laws ask how they’re doing?

So, my in-laws will ask how my partner (their son/step son) is doing and work, etc, but they won’t ask me or about me. I’ve been doing some thinking about a few relationships recently including the one with my in-laws and at the risk of sounding silly, this isn’t ‘right’ is it?

My partner has always had a very rocky relationship with his mum and step dad, and he made the decision to not speak to them for five years. We now speak because life is too short apparently, but things will just never feel right with them. I do feel like I try though. I ask them how they are and what they’ve been up to.

I know I don’t personally need to care… but it bugs me because I haven’t ever done anything. I just didn’t know if this was what loads of people deal with - where all of the focus between them and their in-laws is on the partner - or whether they are genuinely as cold and hostile as they come across.
