This Show Literally Saved My Life, and Here’s How

DISCUSSION

This may be a random thing to post on this subreddit, but I wanted to share how Smallville saved me during one of the darkest times in my life.

In 2024, I was 15. I’d always liked Superman, but I wouldn’t have called myself a massive fan. I started watching Smallville and at first I just thought, “This show is cool.” But while I was watching it, I lost someone in my family for the first time. It was the first time I had ever experienced real grief. At the same time, I was finishing school in my country we finish at 16, and I was only a few months away from that. Everything felt like it was changing all at once.

After that loss, I went through intense anxiety and had some very dark thoughts. When everyone in my family was grieving and the atmosphere felt overwhelming, I would go to my room and press play on the next episode. Smallville became the one thing that helped me get through each day.

I related so much to Clark. I’ve always felt like an outsider in life, and seeing him struggle with that made me feel less alone. Watching him experience grief, especially at a similar age to me, hit even harder. It felt like the show understood something I couldn’t put into words.

If it wasn’t for Smallville, I genuinely don’t think I would have made it out of that place mentally. It gave me comfort, hope, and something to hold onto when everything else felt heavy.

Now, Smallville is a huge part of my life. I’m planning to meet Tom Welling and Erica Durance, along with other members of the cast, because this series means that much to me.

I just wanted to share my story and explain why I love this show so much.
