Is it normal to be a little overwhelmed when starting out
Hi guys
I recently started a new role as a People Team Assistant. In general I'll be assisting all departments in the People Team.
I come from a strong admin background and my last role was (albeit remote) as an office manager. So emails, phone calls, data entry, invoicing, diary management. I also recently passed my Level 3 CIPD.
This is the first time in almost 10 years that I have physically worked alongside people as my previous role was entirely remote and for a small company.
My manager is lovely and everyone keeps saying if you have any questions then just ask, and I have no problem asking questions. But I am feeling overwhelmed with the amount of systems this company uses. Two for employee data, one for recruitment and on boarding, the platforms for background checks, the platforms for external vacancies. There are so many and my previous company literally used GSuite, a database, and Xero.
My manager has a strong background in recruitment and she already knows all the roles inside out, all the requirements and whether they are fixed term or permanent. I do not know these things and have to search for them... However the system that has the info I need has about 50 different menus and sub menus. For example I was looking for an offer letter which is normally under Files but I've been told that sometimes it's under Forms and sometimes it's under All.
I've been given a task recently and had to use yet another new system. I'm not slow at learning the systems but I do need some time to get a feel of it. And the task required having the info of the roles, the salary, term, hours, qualifications, benefits, all of which are found on that system with all the million menus. So I was taking my time with each part of the task till my manager asked if I needed further support because she expected me to have them all done by now. And while doing this task I am getting Teams calls to quickly show me how to do something, as plenty of my role will be 'do X task as it appears' so they take the opportunity to show me as X task appears.
I find sometimes instructions given are very clear and sometimes they are rushed and 'just click here and do that and then get this info and put it here thanks'
I don't feel under qualified at all, but I am in only my second week here and feeling rushed already and worried that I'm not making the best impression. I know with time I'll learn the systems by heart but right now I need more time to get used to them but feel I might come across as slow if I keep taking my time. It doesn't help that everyone is working remotely this week, because learning over screen sharing isn't the same as someone sitting with me.
I am excited to begin my career in HR, I'm so happy I got the role but I'm feeling very, idk, juvenile already and like a burden on my team. I'm not sure if it's because I've come from a role I was at for a decade thus knew like the back of my hand, but I am experiencing serious imposter syndrome here.
