My neighbor turned our quiet street into a literal bee farm and I don't know how to feel about it
So this started last spring when my neighbor Dave put up two beehives in his backyard. Fine, whatever, I thought it was kind of a quirky hobby and honestly didn't think much of it. He mentioned something about "helping the ecosystem" and I was like sure man, good for you.
Fast forward to August and I'm sitting on my porch and notice things look... different. I counted at least 8 hives. By October there were closer to 14. Now its spring again and I genuinely lost count, someone told me he has over 20 active colonies back there.
The thing is, the bees themselves aren't aggressive or anything. Nobody's been stung on our street as far as I know. But they are EVERYWHERE. I found bees in my garden shed, in my kids little plastic playhouse, inside my grill cover. My neighbor Karen (yes actual Karen lol) two houses down had a full breakdown because a swarm decided to rest on her car for like 3 hours.
Dave is actually a really nice guy which makes this whole thing so awkward. He brought everyone honey last christmas, hand labeled jars and everything, it was genuinely sweet. But I also found out from another neighbor that he doesn't have any kind of permit for this many hives, and apparently our county has a limit on how many colonies you can keep in a residential area.
I dont really want to report him because he's not a bad person and the honey is honestly incredible. But I also have two kids who play outside and I'm starting to get a little nervouse about the sheer number of bees around. Has anyone dealt with something like this? Is there a way to talk to him without making it weird?
