Looking for Actual Positive Impacts
When someone posts a critique of the mayor here, it's pushed back on by people who seem to like how he works.
From the UNC School of Government (https://canons.sog.unc.edu/2025/08/board-action-and-the-powers-of-the-mayor/)
The mayor's duties include:
- Presiding over council meetings (G.S. 160A-69);
- Voting to break a tie (specifically in yes/no style votes) (G.S. 160A-69);
- Serving as “official head” of the municipality for purposes of service in a civil proceeding as well as for ceremonial purposes (G.S. 160A-67); and
- All other powers and duties enumerated by law (G.S. 160A-67).
'That last category sounds broad but, in reality, is not. Few other “powers and duties” have been “enumerated” by law. Some are: (1) calling a special meeting (G.S. 160A-71); (2) declaring a state of emergency, if delegated by ordinance (G.S. 166A-19.22(a)); (3) filing annexation maps (G.S. 160A-29); and (4) making appointments to the public housing (G.S. 157-5) and hospital (G.S. 131E-17) authorities.'
The first section, "Apex Town Appointments" of Session Law 2023-112 SB 9 gives the mayor, in addition to the council, the authority to appoint the Town Manager, Town Attorney, and Town Clerk. He can also vote on their compensation, discipline, or termination. This was previously just done by the council. So, he has had these powers for his second term, and they will end at the same time that term does. (https://www.ncleg.gov/EnactedLegislation/SessionLaws/HTML/2023-2024/SL2023-112.html)
Now, I could present ways that I think he has not upheld these duties... but I want to hear from people who think he is doing a good job. I won't even try to convince you otherwise, just maybe ask clarifying questions.
What experience have you had with the mayor doing an amazing job?
Or, if you used to feel positively about his work, what was your reasoning related to his role?
Not how he is as a person, not how he was when he was your SRO, not what you think a mayor should or shouldn't do. A specific example of him doing a great job at one or more of the duties above.
Thanks!
