Comparing the new Mega Evolution mechanics to old-school hits

Is it just me, or do the new Ascended Heroes Mega ex cards feel more like 'Grails' than the Sword & Shield Alt Arts did? I’m looking at the texture work on the new Gengar and it's insane. Are we finally back to the 'WotC quality' peak, or is this just recency bias?
