I regret getting my Jetta, would it make sense to trade in for a Honda when I have $7k left on my loan
Sorry for the long post
Last year my car was totaled while parked outside my condo. It was a paid off 2010 Honda Fit with 80,000 miles on it. I loved that car and wanted to drive it forever :(
My insurance paid me out $7.5k for my car (it was 8k before they took out my deductible). All I wanted was another Honda, and I was hoping to find something that had less than 100k miles on it and no more than 10 years old. Well, I started shopping for Hondas and they were all a little out of my budget. I was looking for something around $12k max, but any Honda that price would have almost 200k miles on it. It was a similar story with Toyotas.
So I ended up getting a 2017 VW Jetta with 65k miles for $12.9k (it ended up being around $15k after dealerships fees and whatnot 🙄). I drove a Jetta as my rental and everyone I spoke to said VWs are reliable. It’s not a bad car but…I think I should have splurged and just gotten a Honda, especially since I ended up paying around $15k anyway.
Part of what is making me regret this more is a few weeks ago my catalytic converter got stolen from my Jetta. Apparently there are no VW converters in the whole country so they had to put an order out for out of the country, and they haven’t been able to give me an ETA. I knew getting VWs repaired is annoying because they’re German, but everyone I spoke to said as long as you take care of them you don’t need to get them repaired often. I never would have imagined my Cat would get stolen. I know Hondas have a higher rate of catalytic converter theft, but I’d imagine any repair shop would’ve have another one available immediately. So this is further driving my regret.
In addition to that my infotainment system and CarPlay has been glitchy and it turns out the heated drivers side seat is broken. These things aren’t a big deal but I’m just annoyed in general.
What are my options? I looked into it and I think my car’s trade in value would about cancel out the remaining $7k on my loan. So would that mean if I want to get a $15k Honda I’d have nothing to put down? Would it probably be smarter to just keep my car and deal with it? I’d love any advice.
