A question on Free Archetype and Archetype Skill Feats

Advice

Hello!

I'm a fairly new GM with a table that has two players also new to PF2e, a well versed player, and a player that's pretty much min-maxxed their character out to level 20.

I am using the free archetype variant with a full open book to the players and I've run across something that's a little vague so I wanted a little community insight as to how more experienced GMs might rule something.

Just for ease of viewing, I'll quote Nethys here:

If the group all has the same archetype or draws from a limited list, you might want to ignore the free archetype's normal restriction of selecting a certain number of feats before taking a new archetype. That way a character can still pursue another archetype that also fits their character.

To me, this means the free archetype feats live in their own little bolted on space. At most, a person could end up with three dedications by level 20 following the "you need two feats from that dedication" rule. It doesn't cross with normal level progression.

The curiosity comes when we come across Archetypes like Fan Dancer having Skill Feats such as:

All I'm seeing about skill feats is in the normal Archetype progression page where Archetype feats usually replace Class feats:

This, to me, assumes that the person is going along the normal progression of Archetype replacing class feats as far as power and progression go.

If you can take Skills from a Free Archetype, a person could theoretically have a second "free Archetype" by level 6 by taking both an Archetype feat and a Archetype Skill feat at level 4.

So here is where I'm torn since I don't want power progression to get too far away from me as a new GM:

My thoughts arrange like this:

  1. ANY archetype feats from a free archetype goes in the free archetype spaces, including skill feats. They cannot go into your normal progression skill feats because they are not a part of your normal progression.
  2. You can take skill feats as part of normal progression, but only from your first dedication pulling from the RAW of "You can never have more than one class archetype." where in this case it isn't quite a class feat, but at least creates some restriction.

The above two were called "too restrictive" by the very knowledgeable min-maxxer.

  1. I simply allow skill feats to be taken, but limit the number of free archetypes to 3 to keep people from taking 6 archetypes via skill feats.

I would love to hear other GMs thoughts on this as I am honestly a GM that likes to be a little more lenient, but I don't want the power getting so far away from me that I'm failing to make interesting and challenging encounters. I also don't want to be strung along by the nose by a player that knows more of the system than I do and evokes James Jacobs unofficial answers as law.

I want to be as fair and balanced as I can be for the sake of my less knowledgeable players (and myself!) while still allowing the super knowledgeable forever-GM a proper power fantasy that doesn't encroach on others.
