When does optimization become too much?
In my opinion it's hustle culture. A lot of people talk about being tired of always needing to optimize everything. Turning hobbies into side income, tracking productivity, measuring time. Feeling like every hour should count. It can feel exhausting and a little artificial.
At the same time I understand why it exists. There’s something satisfying about improving things, being efficient, getting a good deal, or feeling like you made a smart decision. Even in small ways. If I’m buying something online I’ll usually take a second to check for a discount code or use some tools for it. Not because I feel pressured, but because it's practical. Saving a few dollars feels responsible, like I’m paying attention.
But when that mindset expands into everything, that’s where it gets complicated. Always optimizing. Always refining. Always thinking about the “best” version of something, it can blur the line between being thoughtful and being restless.
I don’t think it’s purely negative. There are positives, discipline, awareness, value, growth. But it can easily get in the way of your daily life and try to OVER optimize everything, the mindset I mean.
