Story time!
So about a week ago, I had a total of 36 knives stolen from me. Now I live in a good neighborhood. I am not rich by any means, but we are not poor as long as we spend wisely. However, this hurt, but not the pocketbook....ya, that got hurt because I am going to have to replace most of those. (fucking 3 I can not) More than I had to make a choice today to press charges on a kid............ record scratch........so you might be thinking to yourself, how did I end up here, 5.2k worth of knives stolen and a broken heart...well lets go back in time.
So I do not have any kids of my own. My wife and I decided not to have them for "reasons". I do, however, have my brother-in-law's kids. A boy and two twin girls. The boy is a teen and, like all teens, loves knives, am I right?!?. Well, see, I have been teaching him over the last couple of years to understand and love all things sharp and shiny, and he has, in turn, been showing off to his friends.
As of the last couple of months, I have had him over here learning how to sharpen. I gave him my old WorkSharp Precision Pro that I bought for my wife while she was learning a couple of years back during COVID.
Last week, he asked if he could bring over his gf and a couple of friends to learn. I said cool no big deal, the more the merrier. So I have, for the last couple of weekends, been teaching them how to sharpen as well. I gave them all a 66-pouch knife case with a handle and a couple of beater/starter knives (with their parents' permission ofc). So they have brought them over the last 2 weekends to learn and sharpen on Sunday afternoons. Well, this past Sunday was when it happened.
One of the boys who was Dom's "friend" snuck a ton of knives while I was up making snacks and such out of my cases over the course of the afternoon and into his. Sneaky little fucker that one. He would have gotten away with it, too, had he been a teen and trying to lift a fucking case with that many knives in it. The cam caught him struggling to get it on his bike to ride home.
Well, cops were called, but we didn't even fucking notice until Wed. I guess having too many knives can be a bad thing since you don't always look at them. He happened to have taken 3 from some of my glass cases, which is what triggered it. If he just took it out of the hard/soft cases, I might not have noticed until I went looking to post up for a pocket/desk check day.
Well, back to the present. I had to press charges on him today. The cops took him into custody yesterday, but the wife and I didn't know what to do. I didn't want to fucking ruin a kid's life because we all have done fucking stupid shit over the years. However, I found out this isn't the first time, nor would it have been the last, I guess. He had broken into the middle school and stolen several times. So we did press charges in the end, if only to get the insurance involved.
Now with the insurance involved, we can get back the amount taken. They have valued them at around 5.2k, whereas I said about 3k. See, boys and girls, keep a good spreadsheet....shit helps!
Well thats my story time for the month. <3 you guys, and if you wanted to know, like. Hey, why is Pure buying the same shit he just did a couple of months ago? Well fucking that is why lol.
So my question....what would you have done? Would you have let the kid off even knowing that he had done this shit before?
TLDR: Don't let your kids grow up around theiving assholes! j/k
