Traditional Vietnamese Wrestling Tournaments During Lunar New Year – Open to All Fighters 🇻🇳

Every year during the Lunar New Year (Tết) in Vietnam, traditional wrestling tournaments take place across many villages and provinces. These events are part of centuries-old spring festivals, where wrestling is not just a sport but a cultural ritual symbolizing strength, courage, and community spirit.

The competitions are open format in many localities – meaning any wrestler can register and compete, from local farmers to trained martial artists.

Prize money ranges from 5,000,000 VND to 100,000,000 VND, which is approximately $200 to $4,000+ USD, depending on the scale of the festival and sponsors. For rural tournaments, that’s a very significant reward.

Matches are usually fought on sand or grass circles. Victory can be by clean throw, control, or forcing the opponent’s back to the ground depending on local rules. The atmosphere is intense but festive, with drums, crowds, and traditional ceremonies.

It’s raw, authentic, and deeply rooted in Vietnamese heritage.

If you’re ever in Vietnam during Lunar New Year and love grappling sports, this is something worth seeing – or even stepping into
