Amazon update has bricked their smart thermostat

Both of mine (upstairs & downstairs) went unresponsive to Alexa at the same time. I checked the Amazon forums and others are having the same issue. I've tried everything including deleting and readding the device, resetting the device, restarting router, reinstalling Alexa, etc. Nothing helps. You can't access the thermostat from Alexa period. Apparently, if you contact Amazon tech support, they will run you through the same drill only to conclude they can't solve the problem.
