Daughters of Athena are hypocrites
I’ve been reading this series before Morning Star came out and finally had a friend pick up the series. He just finished Dark Age, which made me reread my favorite moments in Lightbringer to prepare for his journey. When I reread the Athena trial it really was annoying for multiple reasons.
First reason is they were sending him to death for sacrificing and leaving the Rim Low Colors to die by the hands of Romulus. But they don’t get to sit on their high horse and judge Darrow’s decision when they were planning to do the exact same thing. Lock themselves under sea and sacrifice all the low colors who were stuck and in hiding. AND IT TOOK DARROW HIMSELF TO TALK THEM OUT OF DOING THAT. But yes, they shall postpone their decision on his trial. I get that hatred is illogical but how could they not see that they were making the same mistake he made.
Second thing is while Darrow definitely messed up and should own the guilt of murdering the Rim low colors, I can’t really blame him or hold him accountable to the point of sentencing him to death. He was a single red, carved to gold, and was tasked with overthrowing a galaxy wide, centuries long society. Like I’m sorry but revolution demands sacrifice. Darrow had to shoulder the burden of making decisions and sacrificing others for the future. And let’s not act like he sat behind others and let others risk their lives for the cause. Darrow for more than a decade has been on the front lines of a war fighting for his peoples future. Easy to look down and patronize his decisions when you’ve never once had to carry even a sliver of his burdens.
Lastly, sentencing Darrow to death for his crimes is such a shallow justice. Killing off the one man who’s been your best chance to fully eradicate Golds and the society. Kill Darrow and slowly watch as the Society wins the war and takes over the galaxy again. Which would revert everything back to before the chains were broken and would make everyone’s sacrifice pointless. That will really bring justice for the fallen Sons and Daughters.
