In " [The Future is an Empty Room,](https://youtu.be/F0K2DnI1TDk?si=QZcQygjNu7W8qs8f) " Jacob Geller explores the concept of "empty rooms" across various media, analyzing how these spaces reflect human isolation and the impact of technology on our perceptions of reality and connection.

Here's a breakdown of the video's key points:

The Twilight Zone's "Where Is Everybody?" (0:07-3:37):
The video begins by analyzing the first episode of The Twilight Zone, where a man believes he's in an abandoned town but is actually in an isolation booth. This highlights humanity's fundamental need for companionship and the challenges of extreme solitude, setting a precedent for the "empty room" theme.

Death Stranding's Vision of Isolation (3:48-10:04):
Geller discusses the video game Death Stranding, where characters navigate a desolate world and often interact through holograms. The game's setting and narrative, including the simulated Oval Office and the characters' self-imposed isolation in bunkers, are presented as a commentary on societal fracturing and the complexities of connection in a post-apocalyptic world.

Pandemic Relevance (9:22-10:04):
The video touches on how Death Stranding's themes of isolation and strained connection gained heightened relevance during the global pandemic, as many experienced similar forms of confinement and reliance on digital interaction.

Ray Bradbury's "The Veldt" and Simulated Realities (11:03-14:17):
Geller delves into Ray Bradbury's short story "The Veldt," which features a futuristic nursery capable of creating immersive, realistic environments. This is compared to concepts like Star Trek's Holodeck, exploring how simulated spaces, while offering comfort, can also mask a deeper, more profound sense of isolation and a "callous misunderstanding of the depths on which isolation operates."

Death Stranding 2 and the Aestheticization of Space (14:21-20:15):
The sequel to Death Stranding is examined for its continued exploration of empty rooms, particularly how characters like Hartman aestheticize their personal spaces with holograms. This suggests a superficial form of connection and a reality where simulated experiences can overshadow genuine ones, posing the question: "Should we have connected?"

Bo Burnham's Inside (20:47-25:04):
The video analyzes Bo Burnham's special Inside, created entirely within a single room during the pandemic. Geller argues that the special isn't about literal confinement but the fear that "the world has become the room," where an abundance of readily available content leads to a hollowed-out existence and a diminished sense of desire.

The Annihilation of Desire (27:23-29:16):
Geller concludes by reflecting on "The Veldt" and another Bradbury story, "There Will Come Soft Rains," to highlight the ultimate threat of the empty room: the annihilation of desire itself. When everything is simulated and instantly accessible, the capacity to dream, explore, and genuinely connect may vanish, leaving a world that is "empty, aestheticized, and nothing real."
