Right, so Fiona Bruce is hosting Question Time tonight and the BBC has already published the panel list, which means the thing doing the damage is not a clip, not a quote, not a bad moment on air, it’s a decision that exists before the cameras even roll, because it names four people and only four people: Heidi Alexander for Labour, Richard Holden for the Conservatives, Robert Jenrick for Reform, and Jon Sopel as the journalist, and the Greens are not in the room.

That list sits there in public before a single audience question, and that’s the whole point, because when a programme that often squeezes in five guests decides it’s only doing four tonight, it isn’t “one of those things”, it’s a hard exclusion choice, it’s a choice about who gets treated as automatic politics and who gets treated as optional, and they’ve made that choice in the same week a Green candidate is actually on a real ballot in a live parliamentary by-election.

Tom Stannard, acting as Returning Officer for Manchester, has already signed and published the legal notice that fixes the Gorton and Denton by-election for Thursday 26 February 2026, and that notice is the hard object the whole week is built around because it lists the candidates by name, including Hannah Spencer for the Greens, Labour’s Angeliki Stogia, and Reform UK’s Matt Goodwin, so the Greens aren’t some outside commentator asking for airtime, they are literally on the ballot in a parliamentary contest happening in days.

Robert Jenrick being put on that Question Time sofa tonight then becomes a broadcast decision with teeth, because the BBC is choosing who gets treated as automatic national politics in the same news cycle that by-election is live, and with Jenrick booked Reform gets the default stamp of “serious” while the Greens get treated as the party you can leave off the stage even when the Returning Officer’s own notice says they are in the same race.

James McAsh has walked out of the Labour Party in Southwark and joined the Greens, and he hasn’t dressed it up as some polite “differences” letter either, because he’s put the reason on the record in plain terms: he says he can’t ask Southwark residents to vote Labour while a Labour-run council is planning for funding gaps and cuts that will hit local services, so he’s framed his own exit as a break over what Labour is doing, not who he’s fallen out with.

Reginald Popoola has then crossed over in the same borough, and Southwark Labour’s response has gone straight for the kind of counter-attack you use when you don’t want the policy argument being the headline, because instead of meeting the cuts claim head-on, the line pushed out is about an internal disciplinary investigation and alleged abandonment of duties, so the public fight gets dragged off “what are you cutting” and onto “is he a wrong ’un”, which is convenient for Labour and poisonous for anyone else thinking of leaving.

Bruno de Oliveira has switched from Labour to the Greens in Brighton and Hove as well, and the welcome has been done the way a party does it when it wants the move to read as solid and repeatable, because they’ve named his ward, named him as a sitting councillor, and treated him as an addition to their numbers, and that’s not just ceremony, that’s a signal to every other Labour councillor watching that there is a landing strip on the other side.

Kath Whittam and Sam Foster have already been on the list as earlier Southwark Labour-to-Green moves, and once you are naming multiple councillors from the same authority, it stops being a one-off row you can wave away as “local personalities”, because the count itself becomes the story and Labour ends up stuck answering why people who used to carry its badge into residents’ lives are now turning up wearing someone else’s.

Keir Starmer has been named directly by councillors who’ve left Labour, which is the bit Labour can’t shrug off as some parish-council soap opera, because when the person being blamed is the Labour leader, it stops being “a local issue” and starts being a leadership argument about what the party is for and who it now serves.

Heidi Alexander being booked onto Question Time tonight then drops into that exact context, because Labour gets the biggest sofa in the room in the same week it’s losing councillors to the Greens over cuts and internal control, so Labour gets to speak as the default governing voice while the party those councillors are joining doesn’t get a seat at all.

Richard Holden being booked alongside her keeps the old screen grammar intact, Labour versus Conservatives, the familiar two-party frame, even though the formal election notice for Gorton and Denton lists a Green candidate and a Reform candidate too, so the programme’s choices lean on what viewers already recognise instead of what the ballot is actually offering them.

Zack Polanski is the Green leader being namechecked as the party people are moving to, and he isn’t on that panel, so you get this ridiculous split where the Greens are busy gaining elected representatives on the ground and the BBC is treating them like a party you don’t need in the national conversation.

Matt Goodwin is listed on the Returning Officer’s notice as the Reform UK candidate, and Reform then gets Robert Jenrick on the sofa as well, so Reform ends up with the neat little double: they’re on the ballot and they’re on the BBC, electoral presence and broadcast presence at the same time.

Hannah Spencer is listed on that same notice as the Green candidate, so the Greens are on the ballot too, and that’s what makes the omission so clean, because nobody can claim “they’re not even standing”, they are standing, they’re named, and they’ve still been left off the programme.

Fiona Bruce’s programme therefore enters the air tonight under a fixed condition in which one party competing in a live parliamentary by-election has been excluded from the panel while its competitor parties are present, and that condition cannot be altered once the programme goes out because the booking decision has already been executed.

And then of course there are the responses to Question Time’s nonsense online.

Declassified UK’s Martin Williams wrote:

This is absolutely outrageous from BBC Question Time! One week before a by-election which is a 2-horse race between Reform and the Greens.... and they only invite Reform on to the show? How can this possibly be regarded as "impartial"?

Journalist Sangita Myska has also weighed in on this saying:
Reform takes up its perma-seat on BBC Question Time again, a week ahead of the crucial by-election in Gorton and Denton. Reform has just 0.8% of seats in parliament. Are the programme’s producers hoping to increase it?

India Willoughby has questioned the impartiality too saying:

So in the run up to the biggest by-election in years, Reform get a seat on

BBC Question Time. But no Green. 24 hours earlier, the entire

BBC Newsnight programme was devoted to Reform. But no Green. Do you see what’s happening here? STINKS. The BBC is corrupt. And they call this “impartiality”. And takking in the Electoral Commission and OFCOM.

Novara’s Aaron Bastani also added his two cents worth saying:
How on earth is it acceptable to only have 2 of the 3 parties competing for the Gorton and Denton by-election a week before the vote? Where is a green? Or even a green voice? It looks intentional.

He’s not wrong and these of course are amongst the polite responses.

People on X aren’t reacting to a “lively panel” because the panel hasn’t spoken yet. They’re reacting to the booking sheet, and they’re reacting the way people react when they can see the decision before the performance: who got the chair, who didn’t, and what that tells you about whose politics counts.

Some of the replies are the blunt ones, the ones that treat it like a stitch-up on sight. Some of them are the cynical ones, the ones that don’t even sound surprised, because they’ve watched this programme do the same sorting job for years and they’ve learned to read absence as a message. Some are the procedural nerds, counting the seats and pointing out the obvious, that four slots means exclusion is not an accident, it’s the whole point of the format that night. Some are making the comparison that does the real damage to the BBC, because they’re not saying “put a Green on because I like Greens”, they’re saying “how are you treating Reform as default ‘serious politics’ while a party that is actually standing in the live contest gets treated as optional”.

And you can feel the anger sitting under it, because it isn’t just party tribalism. It’s people recognising a trick that works in milliseconds. If you give someone a chair on the BBC, you lend them gravity. If you deny someone a chair, you make them sound like an argument happening somewhere else, on the margins, in the comments, among the cranks, and then you act baffled when voters treat them like they don’t exist.

That’s where this stops being a social media slap-fight and turns into a practical constraint. Tom Stannard has published the by-election notice and fixed the date. Hannah Spencer is on that ballot. Matt Goodwin is on that ballot. Angeliki Stogia is on that ballot. The BBC can pretend the Greens are optional in the studio, but they can’t pretend they’re optional on the paper people are about to mark.

So when Fiona Bruce sits down tonight with Heidi Alexander and Richard Holden and Robert Jenrick and Jon Sopel, the show is already performing one act before the first question: it is assigning legitimacy by presence. It is telling a casual viewer, the one who doesn’t follow council politics, the one who doesn’t live on X, the one who only catches politics through the telly, that Reform is the insurgent you must take seriously, Labour is the governing default, the Conservatives remain the permanent fixture, and the Greens are, apparently, something you can leave out without consequence.

That is the reversal, and it’s a grotesque one. Reform gets treated like the main event even when it’s just another party on the ballot. The Greens get treated like a nice-to-have even when they’re literally contesting the same democratic moment. That isn’t neutral. That isn’t “balance”. That’s a choice about what the viewer is allowed to imagine as possible.

And it leaves one thing indefensible once the by-election happens, whatever the result. The BBC will have run its flagship political show in the week of a live contest while treating one of the actual options as furniture you don’t need to put on set, and it will have done it in plain sight, with the guest list published in advance, with the exclusion baked in, and with the public clocking it before a single word is spoken.
