HIGHLIGHT QUOTES:

“When it came to beats and production, everyone told us we were awesome, but no one really wanted to give us a chance. We called, and no one ever called back. It took Common, Questlove, and D'Angelo to call the label themselves and vouch for us, to create some buzz. No one wanted to accept us, especially when they found out we were from Detroit. No one even suspected it before, but once they found out I was from Detroit, it was like, “Nah, screw you!””

“The album was released only on cassette, recorded in our basement, sold by ourselves, and ended up in places like Japan and Portland. People started copying it, and that's how we got our first serious buzz. That's how The Roots found out about us and came to Detroit, and Pete Rock found out about us. That was somewhere around '97, '98. That's when it really took off”.

“The sad truth is that... I'm not saying they did, but many other groups ripped us off. We were a group that were well known by the entire music industry, but the listeners didn't know us, so it was easy for them to do it without being suspected of copying. None of the audience knew us. Someone might say that we sound like ATCQ, but in fact, they sound like us…”

“I'm trying to collaborate with Prince. I'd also like to record something with No Doubt, for example. I don't want to get stuck in rap music. I'd like to do other things as well”.

“We don't have the traditional two turntables on stage, we have two samplers and we basically make beats on stage and freestyle. We do concerts the same way we record albums — everything is spontaneous”.
