When Do You Need a Police Escort for Oversize Load WIDTH? All 48 States [2026 Guide]
A load does not need a police escort just because it is oversize. Law enforcement escort is triggered by specific width thresholds that vary dramatically by state — from 14 feet wide in New England to 20 feet in Texas. This guide covers every lower-48 state.
This is Part 1 of a 5-part series. Parts 2–5 cover height, length, weight, and combinations.
The Width Permit Ladder
Width requirements build in tiers. You do not jump straight from legal to needing a cop:
| Width | What Is Required |
|---|---|
| Up to 8'6" | Legal. No permit, no escort. |
| 8'7" to 12' | Oversize permit. No escort. |
| 12'1" to 14' | Permit + pilot car(s). No LE yet. |
| 14'1" to 16' | LE escort in Northeast states. Pilot cars elsewhere. |
| 16'1" to 18' | LE escort in Southeast, South, Midwest. Pilot cars in West. |
| 18'1" to 20' | LE escort in most Western states. |
| Over 20' | Superload. LE escort everywhere. TX and CA have specific rules. |

How Width Is Measured
Width = widest point of the load, not the truck.
- Mirrors excluded in most states
- Tarps and straps that extend beyond cargo do count
- A truck that is 8'6" wide pulling 16' wide cargo = a 16' wide move
- Overhang on both sides: measure load edge to load edge
The 3 Biggest Anomalies
Texas — DPS does not escort. Ever.
No matter the width, Texas DPS will not escort your load. You coordinate separately with:
- Municipal PD for city streets
- County Sheriff for county roads
- Different agency for every jurisdiction your route crosses
Plan 1–2 weeks ahead minimum. Texas is the most operationally complex state for wide loads in the US.
Montana — No mandatory LE escort at any width
Montana is the only lower-48 state with zero mandatory LE escort requirement. You notify MSP or the county sheriff of your route — they may monitor but are not required to ride along. Permits and movement time restrictions still apply.
Minnesota — Higher threshold than every neighbor
Wisconsin, Iowa, and South Dakota all trigger LE escort at over 16'. Minnesota's threshold is over 18'. A 17' wide load routing through the Midwest needs LE escort in every surrounding state but not in Minnesota.
Multi-State Routes
- Each state issues its own permit and sets its own escort rules
- Your LE escort from State A ends at the state line
- State B may or may not require its own escort
- No federal coordination exists between state programs
- Your permitting agency should identify requirements for every state on the route
FAQ
My trailer is 8'6" but cargo is 15' wide. What applies?
Cargo width. You are moving a 15' wide load. Tractor width is irrelevant when cargo is wider.
Can a CEVO replace a police escort?
No. CEVO (Certified Escort Vehicle Operator) is a civilian certification. It fulfills civilian pilot car requirements — it cannot substitute for mandatory law enforcement escort.
Does the width trigger apply on all road types?
Generally yes. Ohio and California are exceptions — they have different thresholds by road type. Always read your specific permit conditions.
What are the fines for moving without a required escort?
Varies by state. Some levy per-mile fines. You may be required to pull over and wait. Some states treat it as a criminal offense.
Does a police escort allow night movement?
Generally no. Most states prohibit loads above the LE width threshold from moving at night regardless of escort availability.
