AITA for barely contributing to a group project because I genuinely had no idea what I was doing?

So there's a post floating around in my head that I need to get out because I've been going back and forth on this for weeks.

We had a major group project last semester. The topic was assigned randomly and mine landed on something I had zero background in, like genuinely foreign territory. I'm not using that as an excuse, I'm just giving context. From the first week I opened the shared doc and felt this quiet panic because everyone else seemed to immediately know what direction to take it. They started dividing sections, throwing around terminology I had to google, and I just kind of froze.

I kept telling myself I'd catch up once I understood the material better. I watched video explainers, read a couple of articles, left two comments in the doc margins. That was it. The others were writing full sections, fixing citations, restructuring arguments. I watched the document transform in real time and felt genuinely useless every time I opened it, not lazy exactly, more like paralyzed. I didn't know how to contribute without making things worse and I was too embarrassed to just say that out loud.

Night before submission they asked everyone to sign the contribution statement. My name was already on the cover page. And I just couldn't do it. I told them I wasn't comfortable signing because I hadn't done enough to honestly call myself a co author. One of them said I was making it weird for no reason. Another said I should've said something sooner if I was struggling, which is completely fair and also hit hard.

They submitted with my name on it anyway. I didn't sign. Now two of them aren't really talking to me and I keep wondering if I handled the whole thing wrong from the start.

AITA for not being upfront about struggling earlier instead of going silent and then causing drama at the last second?

TL;DR: Got assigned a group project on a topic I had no background in, froze up, contributed almost nothing, then refused to sign the contribution statement the night before submission. Group is mad. AITA?
