I don't feel like it was "bad enough"?

I come from a family with a history of alcoholism. It skipped a generation because my paternal grandmother never touched a drop of alcohol in her life, but she definitely had control and anxiety issues. She was one of my primary caretakers growing up (watched me as a young kid when my parents worked, that kind of thing). Both of her children are alcoholics.

Growing up, my dad's drinking was pretty much kept away from us. He's a functional social alcoholic. He drinks when he's out socializing, very rarely at home and almost never around us when we were kids. He's not violent, he's not abusive. When he was around, he was a decently engaged parent.

What this mostly looked like was my dad had a different social activity 6 or 7 days of the week (golf, bowling, pool, dart league, etc). So he just wasn't home--he'd leave around dinner time and could get home from anywhere between 9 and 2AM. I think the later he was, the more drunk he was, but I was in bed and asleep. The first time I heard my dad called an alcoholic, I was 16 and it *completely* shocked me.

At the same time, my mom had gone back to college while working full time due to financial necessity, so she wouldn't get home until 10PM-ish on most nights. My younger sister and I were left alone a LOT starting when we were 9 and 5, though the later nights didn't start until I was 12ish. Being left alone definitely resulted in parentification and hyper-independence for both of us.

I've had my own mental health issues through the years--anorexia, depression, anxiety, abandonment/trust issues, utterly insane hypervigilance. I've had more than one professional say something to the effect of "You act like someone with PTSD, but there's nothing you're telling my about your past that would warrant that diagnosis". But in therapy the other day, I was talking about my family, the generational alcoholism/trauma, how much like my grandma I am, etc. My therapist had a lightbulb moment and told me to look up adult children of alcoholics. I found the laundry list, and I relate to a lot of them.

I'm just curious if anyone else comes from a similar situation?

TL;DR: My dad is an alcoholic, but I didn't know as a kid because it never happened around me/I don't feel like negatively impacted outside being left alone a lot. I kinda feel like a poser, anyone else?
