I(27M) love my girlfriend (26F), but how do I go forward knowing that we are not each other's "soulmate"?
This is my first real relationship. We've been dating for almost 4 years now , and I am soon moving away for a job. Throughout our time together, I have found someone I deeply love and feel comfortable with, and feel like I have complete acceptance of everything about me. I know that she feels the same way about me as well. With the topic of me moving away, we have been beginning to plan getting engaged, married, etc.
However, I have had this feeling in the back of my mind that even though I am blessed to have what I have with a stable, loving relationship, she and I both know and have discussed that we're not each others "soulmates". I know I know, I don't exactly believe in that term either- however i mean it in the sense that we do not have a lot of interests in common and we have some differences in how we live our lives.
To be fair, some of this is due to her working hard hours and having an erratic sleep schedule, and so she is tired a lot of the time. But I am a little more extroverted and enjoy being outdoors and active, going to the gym, playing soccer, etc. and I strongly believe having hobbies that I grow and get better at are important for my mind and growth. Just things like playing an instrument, video games, cooking, things that I feel help me to keep learning and grow as a person. She does enjoy interior decoration to some extent, but her place is already pretty complete. Otherwise she spends her time watching tv or social media, shopping, maybe once a month hanging out with a friend. She has no issue with it, and she enjoys her life, and I am happy for her. We make it work- she comes to the gym with me, we go on walks, we are learning to play a new sport, I watch shows with her, scroll through social media with her (her favorite). I have no judgments on her choice of hobbies themselves, but it makes me debate whether the lifestyles we have are 100% compatible 10-20 years down the line. I guess I just sometimes wonder what it would be like to have a partner I could do everything with basically, and if that's an overrated feeling or feature of a relationship.
To complicate this, we have a lot of trouble with my family. To keep it brief, my parents are refusing to meet her as they believe I am "too good" for her and do not approve of our relationship. I have not cut them off, as I don't ever think I could cut off my family, but I have let them know that they can keep their opinions to themselves and strongly defended her. I have also reassured her that I do not share any of their beliefs. The rest of my family is caught in the crossfire between us in not wanting to go against my parents but also wanting to support me.
I do not think my family is right at all here. However, I do also wonder if I am doing all of this and resigning myself to a distant relationship with them when she and I do not feel like we are the best match for each other. I can't stress enough that we have talked about this and we both love each other deeply, but both understand we may just have some lifestyle differences. She said that even with all this, if we restarted and had to choose again she would go down the same path. I feel really guilty and horrible about it, but I don't have an answer as to whether I would do the same. While I love what we have, I feel conflicted on whether I am just comfortable with us and "settling" to some extent. At the same time I don't want to romanticize and fantasize about some potential person out there who may or may not happen to fit me better in certain ways. Combined with this being my first relationship, I have just been lost in where to go from here.
Thoughts?
