Period cramps

​For the past year I have been getting severe period cramps. Pills usually don't work and if they do it takes about 3 to 5 hours until I feel their effect. And sometimes the pain is so horrible till the point I throw up (doesn't happen often. Maybe 3 times in the past year) Is anybody like that? And is it normal? I asked my mom and she told me it's normal and that she experienced the same pain when she was younger.
