Hopefully the 4.x Main Story Won’t Be as Bloated as the Previous Ones
Just finished the Amphoreus main quest in Honkai: Star Rail, and I wanted to talk about something that’s been bothering me for a while: the pacing and dialogue bloat in the main story.
Don’t get me wrong, I like the lore, the characters, and the big narrative ideas. I want to experience the full story. But it often feels like the game takes way too long to say things that could’ve been delivered in a few lines. There were a lot of times where I genuinely wanted to read everything, yet still felt pushed into skipping dialogue and just reading the summary because it seemed like characters were going to ramble about something that had no real impact on the story or my understanding of it. On top of that, I sometimes struggled to fully grasp certain story elements because of how they were delivered. The game throws around terminology and phrasing that can be hard to follow, which makes it even harder to stay engaged.
The Amphoreus finale especially stood out to me in this regard. It had some genuinely great and impactful scenes, but they were often interrupted by repetitive or uninteresting dialogue that kind of killed the momentum instead of building it up.
For context, I haven’t started the 4.x story yet, so these thoughts are based on everything up through Amphoreus. I’m really hoping the 4.x main quest improves on this. Tighter writing, more concise dialogue, clearer terminology, and better pacing could make the story hit a lot harder emotionally and keep players engaged instead of fatigued. I honestly think they could benefit from looking at some of the competition too. For example, Wuthering Waves had one of the best overall stories and one of the strongest presentations I’ve ever seen in a gacha game, both in terms of narrative and delivery.
What do you all think? Do you agree or disagree about the storytelling and dialogue length? And do you think the current pacing style works well as it is, or would you want them to shift toward a tighter, more streamlined approach in future updates?
