Good college stats, bad highschool stats, how cooked am I for transfers? Field: Finance (Equity research/hedge fund)
Background: I'm recruiting Equity research / Hedge funds, career wise I want to be a Portfolio Manager at a L/S Fundamental Fun.
To explain the title further, I didn't really end high school with good stats, and my SAT score is mediocre. I don't want to get too far into it, but had a couple of C's, ended with a 3.4 with a ~1400 SAT score (superscore).
I essentially got rejected from all the top universities (as expected) and not knowing at the time, my career prospects were kinda cooked. I took the best option I had (Stevens Institute of Technology)
But I tried making the most of it. I have a 3.8 GPA, leadership positions in ALL the finance programs, alongside being the youngest Portfolio Manager in my school's $1M+ AUM SMIF (Student managed investment fund). Additionally, I also am working for a middle market private equity firm, in a live LBO process right now, and also joining a single-manager Hedge fund over the summer to intern and do research for them. I am also a portfolio manager of a $40,000 AUM Wharton/Cornell Student fund since I did really well on my interview as an outsider, but thats assuming If I get to a target school.
My 2 letters of rec are from the director of my undergrad SMIF director, and the other letter is director of the Graduate SMIF, one owning a $1B+ Hedge fund, the other having a phd from Harvard and formerly an MD at Citibank. n addition, I have over 4+ Ivy league students peer reviewing my transfer essays.
Needless to say, I essentially tried doing everything I could at my current university in 1-2 semesters, getting the top professor recs, decently high GPA, leadership positions, outside opportunities.
My concern is that because the institutions I'm applying to are extremely prestigious and are essentially (target schools) for finance, I don't know if I even stand a chance applying, and wondering if I am softlocked in this college transfer process, as I really believe my time is worthwhile at another institution.
My schools are (ranked by priority)
- NYU
- Columbia
- UVA
- Cornell
- Brown
- Northwestern
- UT Austin
- Emory
- Rice
This year the undergrad application process seems less competitive due to a population decrease from the 2008 crisis, but the question is, how much of a chance do I have? I know it's unhealthy but I'm treating this almost as life or death because I've worked so hard at this institution, but the uncertainty is extremely painful.
